EMI /EMC TESTING

  • EMI/EMC testing is a critical step in bringing a new product to market. EMI/EMC testing involves the process of evaluating and measuring the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characteristics of biomedical devices or systems.

  • EMI refers to the unwanted electromagnetic emissions or signals that can interfere with the normal operation of other devices in the surrounding environment, while EMC refers to the ability of a device to operate without causing interference to other devices in the same environment.

  • Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing are important for medical devices to ensure that they do not interfere with other devices or are affected by interference from other sources. All medical devices undergo EMC testing per IEC 60601-1-2 standards.

  • The specific tests required for EMI/EMC testing of medical devices will depend on the type of device and its intended use. Some of the common tests include:
    • Radiated emissions testing: This test measures the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the device and determines whether it is within the limits specified by the relevant standards.
    • Conducted emissions testing: This test measures the electromagnetic radiation conducted through the device's power cord and other cables.
    • Radiated immunity testing: This test measures the device's ability to operate in an environment with electromagnetic radiation from other sources.
    • Conducted immunity testing: This test measures the device's ability to operate in an environment with electromagnetic interference conducted through its power cord and other cables.
  • The testing can involve a range of techniques, including radiated emissions testing, conducted emissions testing, and immunity testing. It is important to conduct EMI/EMC testing during the design and development phase of a medical device to ensure that it complies with the relevant standards and does not pose a risk to patients or other devices.

  • In our Centre, a comprehensive test facility for EMI/EMC compliance testing has been created. The laboratory is equipped with the state of-the-art instrumentation, which complies with the requirements of International standards. The testing is performed automatically and controlled through software. The test facility available is also extended for developmental activity. EMI / EMC tests are conducted as per National / International standards.
